In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Barons Market is tickled pink to present the latest installment of our Backroom Beer Pairing series. On October 19, we’ll transform loading docks and stock rooms into beer and food speakeasies. Guests will enjoy fall inspired, all-natural appetizers paired with popular brews from San Diego brewery, The Lost Abbey.

100 percent of proceeds from Inland Empire locations will benefit Michelle’s Place. Michelle’s Place, a Temecula-based breast cancer resource center, provides emotional and educational support to people living with breast cancer in Riverside County.

100 percent of proceeds from San Diego locations will benefit Susan G. Komen San Diego. Susan G. Komen addresses the fight against breast cancer on all levels by identifying gaps in San Diego County’s breast cancer care and barriers to access.

“Michelle’s Place and Susan G. Komen San Diego work every day to lift the spirits of women struggling with breast cancer – now it’s our turn,” says Rachel Shemirani, vice president of marketing at Barons. “You can’t underestimate the power of good food and good company for people going through tough times.”

In addition to eating and drinking for a pretty-in-pink cause, Barons hosts its Backroom Beer Pairings to support local microbreweries and bring the community together for an evening with neighbors and friends.

The October 19 menu featuring popular beers from The Lost Abbey includes:

• Red Barn, a refreshing ale paired with Viola’s goat cheese crostini with jalapeño jelly
• Avant Garde, an ale with a subtle yet firm hop presence paired with Irish cheddar, smoked ham and granny smith apple Panini’s
• Judgment Day, an ale with layers of malt paired with spicy pulled pork tacos with southwestern slaw
• Track 8, brewed with raisins, vanilla and toffee paired with salted caramel ice cream drizzled with maple balsamic vinegar

To enjoy these delectable pairings, support local business and give back to neighbors navigating breast cancer, head to your local Barons Market from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19. Tickets will sell out, so click here to purchase your $15 ticket today.

As we get closer to opening our doors in North Park, we are beginning our search for neighbors to join our family. Barons will host our highly anticipated job fair from September 29 to October 1 and we anticipate that we’ll hire more than 40 North Park residents to join our tight-knit team.

“We’re looking for employees that share our values and personify the traits that made us fall in love with North Park in the first place – community pride, hunger for quality products and a fun-loving spirit,” says Rachel Shemirani, Barons’ vice president of marketing. “Barons Market in North Park will be unlike any of our other six locations, and our commitment to good food and good prices will never change.”

With our first urban location, Barons will bring all-natural food, a superior craft beer selection and grab-and-go options to North Park’s artistic, vibrant neighborhood.

To apply, download a job application here or pick one up at the job fair. Applicants will meet with Barons staff from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on each day at its soon-to-open seventh store, located at 3231 University Ave. We plan to announce and hire our official employees by mid-October, providing enough time for training prior to the store’s opening this fall.

Shop at Barons to Help End Hunger in San Diego

Posted in Blog, Community, Events, Family, In the News, News, Uncategorized

Alpine_CashierWhen we learned that one in five children in San Diego County doesn’t always have enough food to eat, we felt unsettled. Our hearts trembled. We had to help.

Come to our Point Loma location this Labor Day weekend and you may notice that the store looks a little different. More than fifty paper plates, hand-illustrated by children and families struggling with hunger in San Diego County, will be on display to kick off September’s Hunger Action Month. The colorful in-store art installation tells the stories of local families who don’t have enough to eat.

You can help fill their plates and brighten their futures. From Tuesday, August 30 through Tuesday, September 6, we invite you to donate to San Diego Hunger Coalition when you check out at any of our San Diego locations. Any amount will support the organization’s work to ensure that nobody in San Diego goes to bed hungry.

Good food can change a life. Good neighbors can too. Please stop in and join us.

Barons Market Requests Proposals for Public Art in North Park Store

Barons North Park Outside Concept

Barons Market requests proposals from local artists to create a public mural inside its premiere North Park location. The selected artist will craft lasting artwork on a four-sided column that visually represents the theme of “growing community through food and art.”

Open to artists living in San Diego – ideally in North Park and surrounding communities – the request for proposals is the first step in a three-stage selection process. Interested artists are encouraged to submit their portfolio, resume and short letter of interest by August 25.

“When Barons opens a new location, we strive to weave the very fabric of the community into our store,” says Barons Market Vice President of Marketing Rachel Shemirani. “We hope that the artist who designs this piece of our first urban location will share Barons’ passion for community.”

Barons’ location at 3231 E. University Avenue will feature North Park-inspired interior design that blends the vibrancy of the neighborhood with modern architecture. According to Shemirani, the neighborhood deserves a grocery store that has as much character and charisma as the people who live there.

Only artists with reviewable portfolios are eligible to apply. For information on eligibility, project specifications and timeline, click here to view the full request for proposals.

Barons plans to open its North Park store to the public by the end of this year. For more information on Barons Market, please follow along on Facebook and Twitter.

If you want to buy Tuscan herb olive oil and Bordeaux cherry balsamic vinegar in the same place you buy paper towels, you’d be out of luck – until now. Barons Market has brought olive oil and vinegar tasting stations to grocery aisles in all six locations, merging the specialties of a boutique store with our all-natural, everyday products.

Ten exotic olive oils and 14 flavorful vinegars fill shiny silver vats at each store’s tasting station accompanied by top-notch bread for dipping.

Now, Barons has expanded the tasting stations to all six stores and plans to include the feature in its newest location opening in North Park later this year.

Barons Market Announces it’s Coming to North Park

Posted in Blog, Community, In the News, Locations, News

Barons North Park Outside Concept

Barons Market is thrilled to announce our seventh location in the heart of one of San Diego’s most artistic and vibrant neighborhoods: North Park. Formerly a Fresh & Easy, the location at 3231 E. University Avenue joins three other San Diego County stores in Point Loma, Rancho Bernardo and Alpine. This news comes on the heels of the grand opening of Barons’ sixth location in Murrieta earlier this year. The anticipated opening this winter marks the first time we have opened two locations in one year.

“Barons Market and North Park are a match made in food heaven,” says Vice President of Marketing Rachel Shemirani. “We stock our shelves with good food, craft beer and locally grown produce – all things that the North Park community values. As a family-owned business founded in San Diego, this location feels like coming home.”

The newest location will feature iconic Barons Market qualities, such as:
• Olive oil and vinegar bar – the only grocery store chain in California with this feature
• Hot soup bar, fresh salad bar and antipasto bar
• Collaboration with local farms to bring customers the best quality and freshest produce
• Products that cost 25 – 30 percent less than traditional supermarkets. No gimmicks, no sales, and no club cards. Just everyday low prices
• More than 400 microbrews, making Barons the go-to craft beer store in Southern California

In North Park, we will collaborate with Architect John Ziebarth and Interior Designer Julie Dugas of Studio H2G to transform the 15,000-square-foot space into a modern-day grocery store with style to complement the neighborhood’s character. Dugas has designed each of the six existing Barons Markets and promises that no two stores look the same.

“Dugas and Studio H2G create shopping experiences reflective of the communities we call home,” says Shemirani. “For our premiere market in an urban Southern California location, we envision the North Park store to reflect the energetic and artistic character of the community – something that you wouldn’t normally see when you go grocery shopping.”

With the new location, Barons plans to bring approximately 30 jobs to the community, for which we will prioritize hiring locally from North Park.

Behind the Scenes of a Barons Food Panel

Posted in Blog, Grocery, In the News, News, Products, Uncategorized

Food Panel Group

Barons Market promises a ten-minute shopping experience, delicious products and the best possible prices. With these guarantees, it’s no wonder people often ask how we make it happen.

The answer is simple: a bit of teamwork and a lot of tasting.

Every week, our managers hold a panel to taste each potential product before it makes it onto our shelves. Our managers pack a small room to passionately debate whether or not a product is good enough for our customers.

Food Panel Todd

Take pasta sauce as an example. Have you ever noticed how many different types of pasta sauces are available in a typical grocery store? All you want to do is make spaghetti, and you’re overwhelmed with the options for sauce. At Barons, we taste all the all-natural options before they make it to our shelves and choose only the very best ones to carry. We’re here to save you from facing 20 pasta sauce options and trying to blindly decide which one might taste best.

Food Panel Oscar

Think of us as your personal shopper. We do the evaluating so you don’t have to. When we taste new products, we assess them based on the following questions:

• Do you like this product?
• Do you like the taste?
• Do you like the price?
• Are the ingredients all-natural?
• Do you like the packaging?
• Is it properly labeled?
• Would you buy this again?

Food Panel Kind

If a product wins a majority vote, we do our best to bring it to your local Barons Market. If we love the product but the price is too high, we try to negotiate it down so you don’t pay too much for the good stuff.

When a product makes it to our shelves, it’s safe to say we’ve already spent hours discussing it, tasting it and deciding if it gets the Barons seal of approval – which only about ten percent of products do.

Food Panel Buzz Beans

We also discuss customer requests and trends at our food panel meetings. The things you say to us in the store make it to the meetings and we figure out how to meet your needs. Have you been on the hunt for organic snacks? Let us look into that. Did you try an outstanding dip at a farmers market? Let us know – it could make an appearance in our next food panel. We want what you want, and this is how we make it happen.

We understand that tasting delicious food every week may not seem like hard work, but it remains at the core of Barons Market. We would never offer products that we wouldn’t feed our families or ourselves, and as our customers, you are part of the Barons family. Every time you shop with us, you can have the confidence that what you’re choosing from is what we have in our pantries – and we like to think we have pretty good taste.
